Thank you, Ballarat! Our local community rallies to save Fed Uni and TAFE in Ballarat CBD on Saturday 1 June

It was fantastic to see a good turnout at our community rally to stop the cuts and save FedUni on Saturday!
Page 2 of Monday's Courier features an article about the event. Photos and an image of the article can be viewed on Fed’s internal Yammer and you can check out the short video below to see clips of the speeches from our own Verity Archer and NTEU National President Alison Barnes.

As well as union members, many members of the wider Ballarat community came out to support our institution, including MPs Michaela Settle and Juliana Addison, and of course we welcomed the presence of the Australian Workers Union, the Australian Education Union, and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation. This shows our community values its uni and TAFE, its teachers, its professional staff, and the role it plays in local economies.

Speakers argued that the Future Fed proposal represents a dangerous misstep for our institution, and that we need to take a different pathway, investing in staff, courses, and student support rather than cutting these things away. Federation University has stood out in the tertiary education market because of the extra level of support we provide for our students, and it is only by investing in and bolstering this that we will make our institution sustainable.

Congratulations to everyone who joined our event!

We’ll be in touch again soon with a Zoom link and agenda for our next member meeting, which will take place at 1230 on Tuesday June 11. As well as our campaign so far, we’ll discuss the next steps in this meeting.

Also, a reminder about the NTEU elections. All members should have received notifications about this via email. Nominations close on June 12 so please start considering if you would like to stand for a Branch Committee position now! We’ll remind you again about this before our meeting, in which we can also offer support with the nomination process.

In solidarity,

NTEU Fed Uni Branch
